Policy for Volunteer Use of the Convention of States Project Trademarks

Citizens for Self-Governance owns and oversees the trademarks for the Convention of States Project name and logos.  Citizens for Self-Governance does not own or oversee Convention of States Action or its name or logos.  Volunteer use of the Convention of States Action trademarks are governed by a separate policy developed by Convention of States Action.

This policy is designed to give official volunteers for Citizens for Self-Governance guidance as to when they may and may not use the Convention of States Project name and logos.  Our goal to make it easy for volunteers to use the Convention of States Project name and logos to promote the Convention of States Project in their local communities without conflicting with our national message or risking unintended legal consequences.

Official volunteers for Citizens for Self-Governance may use the Convention of States Project name and logos to develop materials (including apparel, promotional materials, and electronic publications) and promote events that meet all of the following criteria:

  • The primary purpose of the material or event is to promote the Convention of States Project.
  • The material or event is not being used for commercial purposes (no materials bearing the Convention of States Project trademarks may be sold in any transaction).
  • The material or event is not being used for the purpose of supporting or opposing candidates for public office, contacting legislators, or soliciting individuals to sign a petition concerning legislation.
  • The material or event is distributed or takes place on a local level as opposed to a state-wide or nation-wide level.
  • When a Convention of States Project logo used for any materials or events it must not be altered in any way, including color, except that it may be used in black and white.

If an event or material does not meet one or more of these criteria, volunteers must obtain the permission of the national office before using the Convention of States name or logos as a part of the event or material.  The national office will not approve use of the Convention of States Project name or logos for events or materials that will be used to promote or oppose any candidate for public office or that will result in private commercial gain for any volunteer or staff member.  The national office will grant permission for other requests that advance the interests of Citizens for Self-Governance and are consistent with its tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization.

For example, an official volunteer cannot open a store to sell merchandise with the Convention of States Project logo without the permission of the national office.  That is true regardless of whether the store would turn a profit on the sales.  But a volunteer could host and promote a local Convention of States Project event and use the Convention of States Project name and logo on banners and fliers to promote the event without requesting permission from the national office.

Please note that Convention of States Action has a less restrictive trademark policy for volunteers that allows for more flexibility when it comes to contacting legislators or soliciting individuals to sign a petition.  Volunteers for both Citizens for Self-Governance and Convention of States Action should use the Convention of States Action name and logos when soliciting petition signatures or contacting legislators.
